Back in the late 1800’s this field was a waypoint for many travelers passing through Moose Jaw. With the Trans-Canada Highway to the north not yet thought of, the train was one of the main modes of transportation and the CPR rail yard on the southern boundary of Moose Jaw a main focal point. Moose Jaw now a city, had a population of 147 on the 6th of September 1882 when the first train rolled into town.
Travelers, whether they be Hobo’s waiting to catch a train out of the yards. Gold Prospectors traveling west to the gold fields of BC, Homesteaders on their way through to begin a new life, or Indians heading east to sell their furs in Fort Qu’Appelle, would stop and camp here just out of town south of the tracks.
One of the more famous travelers as reported by the local newspaper in 1876, was Sitting Bull and 185 of his followers that camped here for 153 days after fleeing from Custer's Army in the US.
On most average days however you would usually just find a couple Hobo’s sitting around chewing on a plug of tobacco playing cards while their beans simmered on top of an open fire. Since wood for campfires was scarce, most would find themselves coal spilled from the CPR coal bins which was situated beside the spur line to the south on the other side of the CPR shacks were these houses now sit.
The CPR shacks were used by rail employees on a stop over in Moose Jaw and since they were always moving around workers never did have much use for banks. Most would simply keep their valuables hidden in an old coffee can under the floor boards of the shacks.
Yes the “Field of Dreams” was a welcome sight for many travelers, quick access to the town and the trains to the north, a good water supply from the river at the edge of the field to the east, coal for campfires to the south and possibly adventure, fortune and a new life to the west.
It should be pointed out that now days most maps show this field to be Ash St. however nothing as of yet has ever been developed here, well except for this Geocache which is now a waypoint for a different sort of traveler be they Travel Bugs, Geo Coins or Trinkets. Happy Geocaching.
