If you leave Edinburgh going south on the A701, you might see a
ruined and overgrown structure and maybe wonder what it is... Well
I did. I stopped, had a look around did some research on the
internet and decided to place the first cache of my series 'Yet
another ruin' here.
Burdiehouse was a village on the southern outskirts of
Edinburgh, but has been absorbed by the city. Its name comes from
"Bordeaux House", which is a reference to the fact that it housed
some of Mary Queen of Scots's retinue in 1561. The Kilns were used
to quarry and burn limestone - up to 15,000 bolls per year.
The recommended approach is by bike or you can use LRT bus 37 or
47 (stop is Burdiehouse Village). If you come by car, please don't
drive up the private road at 55°53.576'N, 3°09.660'W - there is no
turning point at the end of it. At this time of the year the area
is overgrown with nettles, so wearing shorts as I did when I placed
it is not recommended.
