In 1906 homesteaders were taking up land in this area so a catholic church "Our Lady of Assumption" was erected in 1910. Around 1923 a Grotto was put up near the church. By 1946, the church was in need of considerable repair. Rather than renovate the old church, Father Rouleau, bought a large Air Force building and moved it to Grassy Lake. The former church was dismantled and the cemetery surrounding it was improved. Today the church building still exists in Grassy Lake but sold to another denomination.
In 1918, the year of the flu epidemic, it was so difficult keeping up with digging graves that some spots have multiple siblings buried in one site. Pioneer days were rough on families.
