Before Bill's Gamblin' Hall, this corner was home to The Barbary Coast.
A little history:
The Barbary Coast casino was originally built by Michael Gaughan, opening in March 1979 at a cost of $11.5 million. In 2004, Boyd Gaming announced that they would purchase Coast Casinos, the parent company and a Las Vegas locals casino brand, for $820 million. The hotels included in this deal were the Barbary Coast, the Gold Coast, the Suncoast, the Orleans, and the South Coast, which was under construction at the time. The buyout was completed in July 2005 at a cost of $1.2 billion.
The Barbary Coast casino was closed at 2AM on February 27, 2007 after the Nevada Gaming Control Board gave approval earlier in the month for the Barbary Coast to be swapped to the Harrah's Corporation. After the deal was completed, the hotel and casino were rebranded as Bill's Gamblin Hall and Saloon, in honor of Harrah's founder Bill Harrah, and reopened March 1, 2007 under Harrah's ownership.
Now, for the cache!
If you travel to Bill's from Bally's (across the street) you have to ride some escalators and walk across an overpass. They have elevators as well, if necessary. On the Bill's side of the street, under the overpass, away from the muggles, you will find an interesting lamp. It looks like it belongs in a European city. Very few people will ever see this lamp when visiting Las Vegas.
