The area around Clarion was once criss-crossed by numerous railroads, but as the industry has faded nature has begun to reclaim its beautiful boundaries.
The rigorous terrain of the Clarion area led to some spectacular engineering of railroads. This cache will be found near some great examples of such.
From Route 68 (very neary I80) turn onto Piney Dam Road (NOT Piney Rd.) Follow this winding country road to the trail head at N41* 10.594, W 079 26.951. There are some places to pull-off near here, notably on the left across from the massive concrete wall. Head up the short path to the abandoned railroad bed, and a nice view over Piney Creek.
Flashlights are highly recommended! Following this railroad bed will bring you to the site of a bridge, known locally as simply "The Trestle," which spans a remarkably high gap over the Clarion River. Take a moment to walk out onto the bridge (if you have the guts) for a great view over the river valley or head underneath to observe its impressive construction and the pine trees that are now actually growing into the supports.
To get to the cache, follow the grown-in railroad bed spur near the tressle. This a great hike high above the Clarion River. You will pass two small waterfalls (cascades, really,) and the cache is hidden near the top of the second one, which is the bigger of the pair.
The container is a green ammo can. It doesn't really fit as well in the hiding spot as the old container did, so please do your best to cover it back up.
The hike isn't terribly difficult, very flat until the final approach to the path. There's a good chance your feet will get wet. And don't forget your flashlight!!!
