Geocache Description:

Four-season cache located in the University of Maine Forest with easy access and parking.

I tried to make this cache a four-season cache for us Mainers that come down with "cabin-fever" in late winter. Walking, canoeing-kayaking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, etc., are ways to access this cache depending on conditions.

The cache is located in a section of the University Forest known as the local "swimming hole" and is also used by hikers, bikers, swimmers, and walk-in picnickers. Most of the visitors at this end of the forest are either UMaine students or students from the two local high schools.

The cache was placed at a point beyond where most visitors swim or picnic to minimize exposure to muggles.

There is a small parking area located at coordinates N44 54.980, W68 41.152, which can hold around 6 vehicles. The road to the parking area is actually between two residences and might appear as someone's driveway. If you drive slowly up to that point, you'll see that the road goes past the houses and into the woods. The distance from the road to the parking is only 100 feet or so.

Once you've parked and started down the trail, follow the trail and resist the urge to follow your GPS. You will appear to be walking away from the cache at one point, but the trail does a sharp turn and comes back on track. The whole point is to enjoy the trail anyway.

There is quite a heavy overhead canopy that might cause readings to jump around occasionally. In spite of that, my GPS corrected itself just before the cache, which is out in open sky. There are clear areas nearby where you can re-set your GPS and walk to the cache OK.

Cache container is a two-quart Igloo insulated cylinder roughly 6 x 12 with a wide-mouth screw cap.

When removing the Cache, please observe its orientation (which end is up) and take care not to break anything that is hiding the container. Also, make sure the cover is screwed on tight and NOT cross-threaded, or it will not be waterproof!

Good luck and enjoy your visit.
