Geocache Description:

September 19, 2015

9 - 9:30 am

Starting point: Portman Park Playground 4601 McCulloch St.

Over 10 years ago, a medallion was hidden by a photographer. The coordinates for the medallion stash was put on the back of a panoramic picture taken from where the medallion was hidden. The picture, and the coordinates, were one-of-a-kind. The photographer was going to re-produce only 50 of the pictures, however, due to personal circumstances, did not complete his mission. And hence, the start of the story....

While stopping in to check on the progress of a bike repair recently, the shop owner finding out I geocache, told me that she had something I might be interested in. She showed me one of the pictures that has been for sale in her store for many years. Blowing off the dust, the back of the framed picture revealed the coordinates of the hidden medallion along with basic information about gps coordinates. It was picture number 12. The conditions of finding the hidden medallion was to re-hide it in the same spot as one found it. She offered the picture to me for a price. Not knowing if the medallion was still in it's hiding spot, I passed on the chance to purchase it.

After contemplating the mystery of the hidden medallion and tossing the idea of looking for it on social media, the interest was there to seek it out. The picture was purchased....

This is a once in a geocaching lifetime event where you and others can solve the mystery of the hidden medallion...

**Did this ancient geocacher actually place the medallion?

**Has the medallion already been found by some unsuspecting muggle?

**Has a decade of tough 4 season weather made the medallion impossible to find?

**What other treasures would one find on the way?

**Would this be reminiscent of Geraldo Rivera opening Al Capone's vault in 1986, or will we actually find something?

Only one way to know... attend the event and follow the crowd... be part of the adventure!

To participate in this awesome adventure, you must be at the starting point by 9 am. We will have a social gathering of geocachers for the event until 9:30 where we can swap stories about our summer caching experience. This is the event for which you can claim attendance. You do not have to hunt for the medallion afterwards in order to claim this event. For those of you wishing to hunt for the medallion after the event, we will work out some car-pooling and give out the parking coordinates to the park where the medallion is suppose to be hidden. At 9:30, as an optional activity for those who want to search for the medallion, we will depart from the starting point, and drive to the parking area. Once everyone has arrived, the picture will be uncovered and the secret coordinates revealed. Then, the hunt will begin! Should we find the medallion, there will be a drawing for the medallion and for the picture. When this grand adventure is over, you are free to cache your way back to Duluth. Taking into consideration the driving to the park where the medallion is hidden and hunting time, I anticipate we will be done hunting by noon.

I did purchase the picture, so any optional contributions to offset the price would be very much appreciated

Please let me know if you are coming from north of Two Harbors and just want to help hunt for the medallion... we could probably work out texting you the parking coordinates to relieve you from unnecessary driving.

*A Minnesota State Park sticker will be needed to park

*Wear good footwear... terrain and walking distance will be unknown

*Bring water

*TOTT may be needed

If you have any questions, please post in a note, or pm me. This event will go on, rain or shine, or snow....
