Geocache Description:

#2 in a series placed near Old Lime Creek Road, this cache is inspired by the labors of the Civilian Conservation Corps. Here was the "highway" to Silverton until Coal Bank Pass was completed in the 40's.

Important--please park by the upper "Road Narrows" sign at about N 37 38.601 W 107 45.883
Below this the way is a narrow, winding, exposed shelf road for over a mile with few safe places to park. Cache is a short walk/scramble from the sign (terrain rating about 3.1). Most impressive section of China Wall is about 1/3 mile farther down road.

Under an allochthonous rock, this cache is in a small metal ammo box (We replaced the leaking plastic box and moved the cache a little north Oct 29, 2010 to get it further from the road and historic structure).

Old Lime Creek Road (Forest Rd 591) bypasses Coal Bank Pass on US 550. South end starts at about Colorado/US 550 Mile 51.3, north end at mile 59.6. Area is fairly high in scenic, geologic, and historic interest. This was once part of the highway between Durango and Silverton. Some interesting engineering examples from a bygone era. Road is maintained for most vehicles. Some places are quite rocky and require careful driving. A bit of clearance is helpful, or small size and willingness to dodge the obstacles.
