Geocache Description:

The cache container is an ammo box with a variety of items, always something for the kids.

Mt. Griffin, used to be the highest spot in Itasca County. This cache is located on a dump just west of Mt. Griffin which is visible from the cache site. Mt. Griffin is not the highest point in Itasca County any more because over half of it was removed to get to a high grade iron ore body. The cache is located on a nearby dump, just east of Mt. Griffin. From the cache site, the next hill west is what is lift of Mt. Griffin. Start your trek from the following coordinates... N47° 19.573'W93° 22.050'. The route in from north of the cache is private property, so please start from the Diamond Lake Road. The trip is about 2.1 miles by trail with quite a bit of up and downhill involved. The cache is located on tax forfeit land since mining has ceased. It is a nice jaunt into an area where mining was active until the early 80's. You will be on the north side of the Diamond Mine and the Holman mine. The mines are full of water now, and look like a large lake. The cache is ATV accessible. Enjoy the trip to this one a lot of interesting terrain. Bring a marker if you like, there are a long row of very large rocks around the west side of Mt. Griffin where locals like to write their names, many left or spray your name on. The rocks were placed there as a guard rail for the large mining trucks.
