Geocache Description:

We have placed the cache by one of the historical places in Butte County.
In the early 1880’s Finnish people had followed the gold rush to the Black Hills. Seeking homesteads they came to the prairie land north of the Black Hills and they began settling in the Crooked Oak Country east of Belle Fourche.
There were years of drought and crop failures. Money to purchase supplies was scarce. But the Finns were industrious. Men, women and children all worked. One man said, “If there wasn’t enough money to buy grub there were lots of jack rabbits around.”
Among the settlers were people of various trades. One man built coffins; a shoemaker made shoes from skins of buffalo and other animals. The women made clothing for their families. Most of the men worked in the Black Hills gold mines during the winter while the women and children took care of the farms and livestock.
In the years of 1885-86, a general store was built on the eastern edge of the Finnish settlement. Soon the store became a nucleus for other businesses which were a blacksmith shop, barber shop, hotel, lumber yard and saloon.
In 1890 a post office was established. The Finnish people had requested the name, “Suomi”, for the post office. The Finns call their country Finland, Suomi, meaning “land of the lakes & marshes.” Apparently the writing of the name, Suomi, was misread and the name came back as Snoma. They decided not to go through the red tape of trying to change the name and the name, Snoma, was accepted. A sign placed by the Butte County Historical Society marks the site where the Snoma post office was located.
The container is located by the historical sign; it is not on the fence or under the fence. Please do not go past the fence on the private property; you won’t find it there. There is a parking spot by the sign. Please do not park in the private driveway or on the highway. The container is too small for trade items, and you will need to bring your own pencil. Thanks, and have fun finding caches in the Crooked Oak Country!
