Geocache Description:

Frendsbury Gardens

Frendsbury Gardens is located on Pincott Place in Brockley, South London, adjacent to the railway bridge. The area was previously a derelict piece of land prone to fly-tipping, which created an unwelcoming, unsafe environment. Neighbouring residents, having tired of the look of the area, approached Lewisham Council with a view to clearing and bringing the land back into use for community benefit.

The garden has held activities such as:

  • parent and toddler sessions
  • winter workshops
  • hanging basket workshops
  • container gardening workshops
  • bulb planting sessions with the local schools and nurseries
  • a visit to Hampton Court Flower show
  • a certified horticultural course
  • themed floristry workshops.

More than 700 people have attended these activities.

On the first Saturday of every month Friends of Frendsbury Gardens hold a 'Bug Club' for young children and their parents to learn about wildlife. The garden has a large crop of fruits and vegetables most of the summer. Passers by are welcome to pick any food they find.

Sculpture

The garden also hosts a series of sculptures by the artist Teena Gould. The sculptures are a series of cylinders which express the transition of the garden and the community using growth and development of seeds and plants a metaphor.  Over 750 ceramic tiles were produced, together with glass mosaic and mirror.  The sculptures describe a passage through the garden, starting with larger statement ones at the main entrance.
