Glacial Erratics of Crumbacher
In Iowa, United States
How Geocaching Works
Located in the 367 acre Crumbacher Wildlife Area, a Buchanan County Conservation Property.
ATTENTION: According to a fellow geocacher, "wilderness mama", she reported seeing three albino deer in a nearby field. I have seen articles on these deer near Independence, but did not realize that they were near Crumbacher Wildlife Area. Be on the lookout for these deer when geocaching in this area!!
This is one of three caches that I have hidden in Crumbacher Wildlife Area. The other two are Crumbacher Wildlife Area and Deep in the Heart of Crumbacher. The caches is hidden near some of the most interesting things that have survived since the Ice Age. They are called Glacial Erratics. What are Glacial Erratics? They are huge rocks or boulders deposited across Iowa after the retreat of the glaciers during the Ice Age. There are waypoints provided for the glacial erratics that I found close to the cache. It is hidden close to the south pathway, so take that route, otherwise you could get your feet wet going thru the timber. It is a camoflauged plastic coffee can hidden with lots of geoflauge, so replace the geoflauge after finding the cache. Lots of little odds and ends are in the cache with a special geocache FTF certificate for the FTF cache hunter.
Here is some information on Glacial Erratics:
An erratic is a piece of rock that has been eroded and transported by a glacier to a different area; it is left behind when the ice melts. Glacial erratics give us information about the direction of ice movement and distances of transport. Glacial erratics can be any size from small pebbles to large boulders the size of a house.
THIS IS A HUNTING AREA, SO WEAR BLAZE ORANGE DURING HUNTING SEASON!!

This is a picture of a receding glacier leaving glacial erratics behind. This is what happened in Crumbacher thousands and thousands of years ago.
