Do you want to avoid the crowds on Barr trail and see a new area
on Pikes Peak? Scout's Signpost” points out a turn off
from the main road that is typically followed from the Ute Indian
Trail or the “Ring the Peak Trail”. Going uphill here
and following the road will take you directly to Sport's Scenic Solitude cache
(GC1T2FJ). This turn-off is a hard spot to find since there are a
number of roads that head up hill from the main road. I have made
the wrong turn myself on two occasions. This cache is placed to
mark this crucial location. When you find the cache you are on the
road that will take up all the way to Barr trail via the
“Experimental Forest” It is by far my easiest to find
cache. It is a shiny bison tube (formerly red but now faded). You
can probably spot it from ten feet away.
This area does see some hiking traffic but far, far, less than
Barr trail and once you start uphill at the cache you will rarely
see anyone.
Note, that all the roads mentioned here are closed to any
motorized traffic except for specially authorized vehicles (e.g.,
search and rescue, or utility maintenance).
As is my standard, the cache is hidden in plain sight and in
this case is not well camouflaged at all. There is no need
to touch or disturb anything to see or find the cache
There seems to be something in the area of this cache that causes
erratic readings. I have gotten inconsistent readings here with
both my Garmin 60csx and Delorme PN-40. The above coordinates are
based upon multiple visits and averaged readings (with an estimated
error of 7 feet) but based upon multiple reports you should expect
to be off a bit. This cache is intended to be easy so keep in
mind that if you are standing just a few feet uphill on the road
from the intersection corner you can look carefully and spot the
container while still standing in the road.
Vorticity has offered a good hint. He says to keep in mind that
the cache: "can be reached from the roadside without going up
the bank."
WingsandTales has suggested these coordinates: N38 52.872 W104
