Geocache Description:

Located on the summit of the Golden Hinde, Vancouver Island's tallest mountain at 2198 m. Not for the weak of body or the faint of heart!

I couldn't resist hiding a cache at the highest point on the Island while on a five day trek and climbing adventure in Strathcona Park. The cache is a small Lock & Lock with a log book, pencil and a survival blanket in case you don't have the beautiful weather I enjoyed for my trip.

The most used route to the Golden Hinde is via Phillips Ridge. The trailhead is at Westmin Mine at the south end of Buttle Lake. It starts with 86 switchbacks on an excellent trail up to Arnica Lake, where there is a small campsite. The route then heads up onto the ridge and continues on over a seemingly endless series of humps and summits, with the Hinde in view much of the time. Most hikers descend just before Carter Lake and skirt the west side of Carter and beautiful Schjelderup Lakes. The route then heads up onto the north shoulder of Mt. Burman, down to Burman Lake then heads up onto the South side of the Golden Hinde itself. Above the lake at 1500 m the real climbing begins. The easiest route, up the "gulley" is Class 4 scrambling, with a few hairy parts! Some experience on rock and scree is advisable.

My new GPSmap 60CSx says the round trip was 60km, with just under 6000m of total elevation gain. We took 5 days. The record is about 21 hours!

If anyone wants more info or my tracklog, contact me. Go get high!
