When I was young, I remember this “huge” new place where you could go shopping for just about everything! If you wanted groceries, a big Giant Food sat on one corner. If you needed something for that special occasion, the Virginia ABC store was just a few stores down! And don’t forget Fanny Farmer’s for the best candy in town, or High's for your favorite ice cream treat! Overeat or just not feel good, you could get your favorite remedy or a prescription at People’s Drug Store. Clothes for everyone could be found at different men and women’s clothing and shoe stores like Lerner Shops, Jacob’s and Levy, Thom McAn (yes, just one n)and Baker’s shoes, and J.C.Penny Co. And when they needed cleaning, Willow Lawn Cleaners was ready to make them like new! Need something for your car, Advance Auto Parts was there with parts and accessories for your every need. Just want to relax or have fun, Willow Lawn Theatre and Willow Lawn Bowling were available. Had a favorite hobby you needed something for? Roger’s Toy store was just the place! How about a store with a little bit of everything? F.W.Woolworth and G.C.Murphy Co. were both there to fulfill your every need! I remember this so well because my mom worked at G.C.Murphy Co. from the opening until she retired over thirty years later, and I spent a lot of time roaming around the shopping center. My first job, other than being a paper boy, was at Murphy’s as a “stock boy” for 75 cents an hour! The stock room was upstairs over the store and was where Barksdale Theatre is now. I’m sure many of you have similar memories and I hope you enjoy working on this cache! Good Luck!
