Geocache Description:

This is a "must do" cache location for everyone! It is a very unique spot with some very unique features. HOWEVER-HEED THE WARNING SIGN OF NO CLIMBING. THE CLIFFS ARE LIMESTONE AND ARE VERY CRUMBLY AND DANGEROUS.

THIS IS A MICHIGAN LOST TOWN AND PROTECTED BY THE KARST CONSERVANCY. THE BELOW DESCRIPTION COMES FROM THEIR ARCHIVES AT THE WEB SITE www.caves.org/conservancy/mkc/ The town and business of Fiborn Quarry existed here from early 1905 until late 1935. The quarry plant, crusher and steam engine shop, along with a grade school, a boarding house, and a company store; a population of employees and their families, many living in company houses, formed the core of an isolated community. During those years most of the unusually pure limestone from the pit was removed by rail to the Canadian Soo, where Algoma Steel, owners of the quarry lands from 1909 until 1987, used the stone as flux in their steel making operations. In 1935, with the permanent closing of the quarry plant, Algoma Steel required workers and residents to move away. Only a single family remained to manage to quarry's affairs, and Fiborn Quarry became a ghost town after thrity years existence. The cache is not near any cliffs. I averaged the coordinated 200 times and should get you near "standing on top of the cache." The cache is the usual size tupperware with goodies for everyone including a couple geocache.com items and a $2.00 bill (real.) Please rehide the cache well to keep it safe. The road is dirt and gravel but in quite good shape. I drove a mini van in without trouble. *****UPDATE 4/16/05******** When approaching this cache it is best to follow the two lane gravel road all the way. When you get to the Karst Conservancy sign, follow the road to the right. This will take you to the north side of the quarry and is a much better road. ALSO, take some time and explore the area. there is a kiosk if you take the two track on the north side of the quarry. I have added some new pictures of other ruins in the area. ***“This cache is located within the Fiborn Karst preserve, which is owned and managed by the Michigan Karst Conservancy. All of the preserves managed by the MKC are free to visit. Parking is allowed only in the designated areas. Always practice Cache In, Trash Out.”

This cache is part of the Michigan's Lost Towns cache series.  Visit this link to see the complete list and to submit your own!!
