"Chess Challenge"

by

HawMorFords

While not everyone can play the game, everyone knows something about the game of chess and has seen a chess set - some people have even seen those giant chess boards with the life size pieces.  Well, the HawMorFord's Chess Challenge is based on a similar theme though there is a twist or two.

For a start, the chess board is big  -  very big!  Take a look at the attached file.  Secondly, the pieces are small -  very small!

Challenge Part A - Your first challenge is to take a look over the board (coordinates provided) and determine which pieces are on which squares.

To set up the board, you must visit each square on the board (yes - all 64 of them!).  Obviously some squares have pieces though most are blank.  You are looking for labels (naming the square and the colour and type of piece, if there is one).  All labels have been placed in a uniform manner.

Challenge Part B - It is white's move and you must find the 'forced mate' in four moves.

When you have your board setup, you must then solve the chess problem.  Some research may be necessary if you are not familiar with chess problems but we can say that this is a 'clean' mate.  Some say that it is one of the most beautiful combinations ever reached in actual play.  Not bad considering the winner of the game was blindfolded !!!

Challenge Part C - Find the cache !

Once you have solved the problem, you must record your moves.  There are a few types of notation used in chess to record moves and games but with a little research, we're sure you will settle on the one that is most suited to a GeoCaching challenge.

Add all of White's moves together - Total of White's moves = WWWWW

Add all of Black's moves together.  Total of Black's moves = BBBBB

The cache is located at: 38J  (46244 + WWWWW)   (67F13B + BBBBB)
