James Buchanan was the 15th (1857-1861) President of the United States. He was the only man to serve as President, who never married, and the only citizen of Pennsylvania to hold that office. He was born at Cove Gap, near Mercersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, on April 23, 1791.
In 1809 he moved to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was one of the first volunteers in the War of 1812 and served in the defense of Baltimore, Maryland. He was elected as a Democrat President of the United States in 1856 and served from March 4, 1857, to March 3, 1861. He retired to his home "Wheatland," near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he died June 1, 1868. He was intered in Woodward Hill Cemetery, Lancaster, Pa.
This cache is located at the entrance to this beautiful park dedicated to James Buchanan. There is a nice statue nearby. If you bring your dog, take it up to the dog park within and let it run a little. You find kids at the pool in the summer, people playing tennis, baseball games and a carnival in the fall. The Lancaster Bocce league even enjoys league play here. Enjoy the sights, sound, and scenery.
