My biggest challenge to date. Walk through a mountain on the south part of Puerto Rico to see a curious tree and a Puerto Rican flag on top of it. Outstanding views wait for you there. This spot can be seen right after you pass El Jíbaro monument on road #52 south.
Every time I travel on PR #52 south to my home in Santa Isabel, I see a curious tree and a flag on the top of a mountain right after el Jíbaro monument. After a couple of months planning and scouting, I finally found the way up, and the views are absolutely amazing.
Now these are your instructions to properly reach the cache, follow them because the trail is pretty difficult sometimes. First follow PR #52 south and make an exit right on the toll plaza (peaje) to road PR #1 North, follow it for nearly 2 minutes and make a right on waypoint #1. Continue this road to the end and park near the house, begin your trek at waypoint #2 and on waypoint #3 make a left. Continue your way up on the trail until you see the tree near waypoint #4, follow a near invisible trail to waypoint #5. On this point I lost the trail, try to follow the following set of 5 waypoints on the list to reach the tree because I think it's the best way up. The trail exists but it can't be seen because it's pretty overgrown by recent rain events.
You can see the whole trail on Google Earth, prior to the hunt it's recommendable to print the image and compare it to the track log on your GPS unit while you're on the hike. This way you can see where you are and how much hike is left.
It took us 2 hours to reach the top because we made several stops to rest. The way down was faster, like an hour and 10 minutes. 5.6 km. round trip.
Please be very careful when you do this cache, it's absolutely necessary to bring lots and lots of water, it's no joke. Long pants are very useful, sunblock, hat, food, thirst quencher beverages, walking sticks, hiking boots and you may consider a machete because on rainy seasons it gets pretty overgrown on some spots of the trail, first aid kit and a geobuddy to give you company during your journey.
Since this cache is so remote, it will be difficult for me to give frequent maintenance, please help me with this task when you visit it.
The cache is a regular lock and lock with an FTF prize and pin, my new TB Rock isn't dead, log book, 2 pencils, sharpener and lots of goodies.
A video of the hike to the Árbol Solitario can be seen at: www.vimeo.com/1834981
I hope you enjoy this cache experience as much as I did.
