Geocache Description:

Located at Public Square in downtown Cleveland (near Rockwell and Ontario). The cache is a black 35mm film canister with a log and a pencil. The final verse below gives a clue to the exact location.

FYI - In November 2008, 13 surveillance cameras were installed on Public Square so police can monitor the area. Extra stealth is recommended. (visit link)

Not far from the cache site is a metal plaque commemorating Charles Francis Brush and America's first street lighting. The plaque is at 75 Public Square, across the street from the cannon and just west of the Huntington ATM.

A few blocks away is another remembrance of Charles F. Brush. A large medallion at the Euclid entrance of the Old Arcade bears his image and name, as he was among the Arcade's original investors.

The year was 1879
A Clevelander with a brilliant mind
Invented a lamp that really shined

It gained renown as the first street light
A dynamo made it especially bright
To illuminate even the blackest night

Its grand debut was a festive affair -
Thousands assembled on Public Square
To witness the new electricity there

When dusk had donned its darkening shroud,
A hush fell over the waiting crowd
Then the current flowed and the lamps were powered

White light beamed forth everywhere
With radiance beyond compare
And the moment was met with great fanfare

Shouts arose from the dazzled throng
The Gray's Band struck up a lively song
While a section of artillery saluted along

The invention's well-deserved acclaim
Made Charles Brush a glowing name
In the luminary hall of fame

His vision, skill and innovation
In lamp design and implementation
Electrified cities across the nation

The lamps from that first grand display
Were superseded along the way,
But an Art Nouveau Brush lamp remains

You'll find it near the Old Stone Church,
A landmark light where pigeons perch,
Above the site you'll want to search
