Geocache Description:

A 9 mile Wherigo paddling tour of Dead Creek and Snake Creek. You seek an ammo can.

This cache tells a snippet of the Riffster Clan's history. For the rest of the known history, visit this link: (visit link)

Suibhne Riffster, my great, great, etc, uncle, was known more for his hapless adventuring than anything else. His only claim to fame was coining the term "Blogging", though even that was ultimately a failure. You see, to a member of the Riffster Clan, "Blogging" does not mean to gather hordes of barking moonbats, intent on sipping overpriced coffee, made from handpicked beans from the inner most part of outer Mongolia, who post their vapid silliness regarding politics on the Internet. For a Riffster, "BLOG" is an acronym for Butt Load Of Gators. Turned into a verb, "Blogging" therefor means to travel in the realm of Alligator Mississippiensis. You'll see what I mean when you paddle out here.

During this quest, you will follow Suibhne's ancient path, as he wandered about, following a poorly written treasure map, in search of an old metal box, known as an Ahmoh Kahn, which was said to contain great treasure. (Remember, to a Riffster, broken McToys and moldy Play-Do are treasures) At many points along the path, you will be asked to place yourself mentally in Suibhne's shoes, to see the world as he saw it, answering questions regarding how he felt at the time. Once you figure out Suibhne's outlook on life, this task should become fairly easy.

This course follows part of the Hontoon Dead River Paddling Trail, one of many designated paddle routes set up by Volusia County Parks system. If you want to print out a map of the entire route, you may do so here: (visit link)

Your quest will begin at the west end of French Ave, off of 17/92, in Orange City. Drive past the entrance to Blue Springs State Park. In about a mile, you'll come to the St John's River. Park at N 28° 56.807 / W 81° 20.640, and splash your boat. DEP often has law enforcement at this site, so make sure you have any and all gear you might need, including a PFD ready for immediate use, and a sound producing device, such as a whistle. I've included my tracklog as an image on the cache page, so you'll know what you are in for.

As you approach the island which holds the cache, please pick your landing spot with care. As the acronym in the title implies, this area is bristling with alligators, many of which are big enough to eat you. The island can get very mucky during the wet season, so you should plan on bringing a pair of sturdy shoes with you. Snakeboots would be best, as the island is prime water moccasin habitat. Maybe keep the boots inside your boat and don them after you land? Other things you should have include a pokey stick, long pants, a long sleeve shirt, paddle shoes, gloves, more water than you think you'll need, snackage, bug spray, sunblock, a cell phone, pain reliever, spare batteries and a good hat. You will also need a device capable of playing Wherigo cartridges. You can spend a butt load of money on such a device, or you can improvise by checking out this link on the Groundspeak Wherigo forum: (visit link)

You will need to go to the "Related Web Page" link at the top of the page and download the Wherigo cartridge to your device. From there, simply follow the prompts in the device till you find the cache. I suggest saving your progress after every waypoint, so you don't lose your progress and have to start over.

If you wish, you could launch from Blue Springs State Park, for a fee. They rent canoes and kayaks. Again, for a fee.

The satellites were giving me fits when I hid the final, bouncing me all over the place. I took 6 waypoints marking the final, and they all claimed to be over 50' off when I followed the arrow back to the cache. Not sure if this is due to tree cover, space alien activity or what, so I've included a really good hint which should put it in your hot little hands in no time.
