As a kid my
absolute favorite cartoon was the Wacky Races. It was
probably a sign that geocaching, and racing after FTFs, was
in my future. If you've never seen the cartoon, here are the
racers:
The names of
the cars and their (mostly) lovable characters from left to right
across the top and then across the bottom are:
The Ring-a-Ding Convert-a-car with Professor Pat Pending; The
Bullet Proof Bomb with the Ant Hill Mob (Clyde, Ding-a-ling, Zippy,
Pockets, Snoozy, Softy, and Yak-Yak); The Compact Pussycat with
Penelope Pitstop; The Turbo Terrific with Peter Perfect; The Army
Surplus Special with Sargeant Blast and Private Meekly; The Boulder
Mobile with The Slag Brothers (Rock and Gravel); The Arkansas
Chugabug with Luke and Blubber Bear; The Crimson Haybailer with The
Red Max; The Creepy Coupe with Gruesome Twosome (Big Gruesome and
Little Gruesome); and The Buzzwagon with Rufus Ruffcut and
Sawtooth. (There was also a bad guy called Dick Dastardly and his
sidekick Muttley driving the Mean Machine but we won't concern
ourselves with them, all Seattle Wacky Racers play fair!). My
favorite was always the Boulder Mobile.
The weekly
episodes were essentially the same - a wacky race to get somewhere
first. Various mishaps would occur, the competitors would try to
outmaneuver each other, some would bemoan the inherent advantages
certain racers have, and eventually there would be a very close
finish among 3 or 4 of the Wacky Racers. Somewhere, somebody kept
score. Not unlike the Seattle scene these days with these (mostly
lovable) racers:
It might be fun
to assign the 10 TUS to a Wacky Racer team (choose from Nolenator,
OldBaldEagle, FunnyNose, The Mercury Project, nevcowpok, markta,
Prying Pandora, BHMP, fauxSteve and blindleader).
The puzzle
shouldn't have you muttering like
this.
