Ward's Rusty Box Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

New York Admin: I have been contacted by the Bureau Chief Forest Preserve Management NYSDEC in regards to geocaching in the high peaks areas of the Adirondack State Park. He expressed his concern of the sensitive ecosystem in the area and the undue pressure searching for geocaches and summit registers are placing on it. The Bureau Chief has asked us to remove all geocaches in this region. This includes the Western High Peaks Area (zone B) and the Eastern High Peaks Area (zone C) as indicated on this map. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/33889.html

Regrettably I am archiving all geocaches within this area and asking they be removed as soon as possible. The rangers could be writing tickets today but The Bureau Chief has asked them to hold off until 1 July, 2007 giving us the opportunity to police ourselves.

Your cache is within the High Peaks Region and needs to be removed as soon as possible. After your cache has been removed please email me at newyorkadmin@gmail with the GC number and let me know the cache has been picked up. If the cache is still in place after 1 July, 2007 you may be ticketed.

Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the Adirondack Park, not far from the village of Tupper Lake. From route 3, take the road that begins at N44 13.71 W74 18.98 to the trailhead.

You will be doing about five miles of hiking on an easy to follow path to reach Ward's Rust Box. The walk is mostly level and can be a bit muddy in the spring and after it rains. Near the cache are several lean-to's that are usually full summer weekends, so bring a tent if sleeping under the stars in not in your plan. A trail guide and map can obtained through www.adk.org.

The container is not watertight but is quite large. Don't wander far from the trail, the wilderness is extensive in this area. Keep the trial in sight at all times while foraging for this cache.
