This cache has been archived.

Nomex: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

This is a microcache (Altoid's tin) located at a playlot dedicated to a little boy who died accidentally short of his third birthday. The cache contains a golf pencil and log sheet.

I became aware of Jake Thomas Eby in the year 2000, when my sons and I were in Las Madres Neighborhood Playgroups. On January 27, 2000 Jake, a not-quite 3-year-old from another Las Madres playgroup, was accidentally killed when he was hit by a car.

Jake's family and friends formed the Jake Thomas Eby Memorial Fund Committee, which began to raise money for a safe tot lot in Jake's memory, to be built at Almaden's Parma Park. Approximately $400,000 was raised by this group, and it was supplemented with funds from the City of San Jose. Ground was broken on the play area on December 15, 2001. Jake’s Play Lot was dedicated on June 16, 2002, which would have been Jake's fifth birthday.

If you look around the grounds, you will see signs of the dedication and love that were put into this project. Among the fundraisers that were held, tiles with children's handprints were sold to cover a wall in the area of the playlot. A cheerful sign proclaims this to be Jake's Play Lot, and plaques tell about the boy and the playground he inspired.

Andy and I stopped by here to place this microcache on Sunday, June 1, when there were many families out having picnics, cooking hamburgers, playing in the water display, and having fun. I never met him, but I believe Jake would have liked this place! We placed this cache so all of you can see Jake's Play Lot for yourself.
