Desde longa data que a agricultura é um dos pilares fundamentais da
economia alentejana. As culturas cerealíferas foram, entre os
finais do século XIX e a década de 1960, preponderantes como mostra
a ideia que o Alentejo é o celeiro de Portugal. É, portanto, neste
contexto e com uma economia de subsistência com fraca circulação
monetária, que se enquadram os sistemas de moagem com o recurso à
energia hidráulica sob a forma de energia mecânica.
Os moinhos hidráulicos de cereais, são basicamente de dois tipos,
os de roda horizontal e de roda vertical também denominados por
azenhas. Os primeiros, mais antigos, não se sabe a sua origem por
terem sido encontrados em locais tão distantes como a China, a
Grécia, o Médio Oriente e o Norte da Dinamarca, donde resulta o
facto de também ser conhecido por moinho grego e/ou moinho nórdico.
No caso dos moinhos de roda vertical, são referidos em 25 a.C. numa
obra de Vitrúvio. Estes, também conhecidos por moinhos romanos,
podem ser de dois modelos: propulsão superior e
inferior.
Na década de 1960 existiam em Portugal cerca de 7 mil moinhos de
água em actividade onde o Moinho da Canáda é um exemplar. Como a
maior parte dos cursos de água onde se encontravam instalados os
moinhos estavam sujeitos a bruscos e acentuados aumentos do volume
dos seus caudais, estes moinhos eram construídos de forma a não
sofrer danos importantes nas sua estrutura arquitectónica na altura
em que eram submersos, daí o seu nome de moinhos de
submersão.

Guadiana neste local. A corrente possui uma falsa aparência de
tranquilidade.

of the nineteenth century and the decade of 1960, crucial as shown
the idea that Alentejo is the barn of Portugal. It’s therefore in
this context and with an economy of subsistence with little
monetary circulation, which fit the systems for milling with the
use of hydraulic power in the form of mechanical
energy.
The hydraulic grain mills, are of two types: horizontal and
vertical the wheel. The first, the oldest, no one knows its origin
because they were found in places as far away as China, Greece, the
Middle East and northern Denmark, in which thewy are also know as
Greek mill and / or Nordic mill. In the case of vertical wheel
mills, are referred to in 25 BC in a work of Vitrúvio. These, also
known as Roman mills can be of two types: upper and lower
propulsion.
In the 1960 decade existed in Portugal about 7 thousand windmills
of water activity in the mill where the Canáda is one of them. As
most of watercourses were installed where the mills were subject to
sudden and sharp increases in the volume of its flow, these mills
were built not to suffer major damage in their architectural
structure at the time were submerged, this is the origin of the
name mills of submersion.
