"Monkey Bone" |
This cache is
located outside of the historic and beautiful Root Glen, between Hamilton
College and Rt 233 in Clinton New York. Root Glen is named after Elihu
Root, an 1864 Graduate of Hamilton College, and reciepient of the Nobel
Peace Prize.
I recommend that you pass through the Glen on your way to the cache, as
it is a gorgeous garden and has beautiful shaled pathes that lead into
the glen and guide you through interesting foliage along the pathes.
Please be very respectful to the Glen. They have a nice saying at the
information booth near the parking lot (you can stop here and sign the
log and grab the literature) that says something along the lines of "Think
of the glen as a library book. If someone were to tear out one page of
the book, it may ruin the story for people reading it later". Unfortunately,
some of the students at the college aren't so respectful of the glen,
and leave the occasional beer can and other miscellaneous garbage. Please
cache in and trash out, there isn't a lot of trash, but, you make the
experience better for everyone who enjoys this area.
Overview of the points of interest....
Parking: There's two parking lots here right near that
waypoint, I use either when I go. If you're headed towards the college
from Rt 233 (that is, going up the hill), the parking is on your left.
There's also two dorm parking lots that are nearby and lead to the glen.
If you hit the dorm parking before you hit the visitor parking (the parking
noted by the waypoint) -- you're in for a 'deusy'. Change the terrain
to a 4 and difficulty to a 3. This is what I call the "unmarked guerrilla
entrance", carved by students which leads to the cliff overlook.
I've been going to root glen for 2 years and am still eye-balling this
entrance to see if I can find a way to do it myself -- one unfortunate
group of cachers accidentally went this way... be warned :) Alternatively,
if you go to the dorm parking lot that's just a couple driveways further
than the visitor parking, there's a marked entrance to root glen.
Pagota Statue: You can't miss it (if you've entered the glen
using the parking waypoint)
"Monkey Bone": This is kind of a silly one.
It's a tree that's deformed, and has this huge knot a couple feet up it.
Somavenus and I always mention it when we walk by it. I jokingly called
it "monkey bone" one day, and we've called it that ever since.
If you've gotten to monkey bone, the cache isn't far.
Gave a terrain rating of 2.5 cause there's some thorns to negotiate before
you get to the cache. Bug spray highly recommended spring/early summer.
I love snowshoeing in this area, and definately would recommend this as
a good winter find.
