"Hillforts are the best known and the most beautiful
archaeological monuments in Lithuania. Their total number
approaches one thousand..."
"The hillfort as a defensive facility, contains two basic
elements, i.e. the fortified locus itself and its fortifications.
The fortified locus is the levelled summit of the hilltop. It was
arranged on the summit of a mound. The levelled summit was enclosed
by earth fortifications, which include ramparts, ditches, terraces
and slopes, as well as wood fortifications, which include various
fences, barriers, towers and walls. Only earth fortifications have
survived until today. They usually consisted of several lines.
Apart from the main rampart and ditch there used to be one or a few
lines of additional smaller ramparts and shallow
ditches..."
by Gintautas Zabiela, an archaelogist.
This particular hillfort dates back to the beginning of the 1st
Millenium and later the 14th Century.
There was a castle on top of the hill mentioned in 1338. The
hillfort is near where the noname creek confluences with Nemencia
River.
Radio amateurs may find it an interesting spot to operate
their
short wave radios from VI44 that refers to Nemencine
Hillfort for a LHFA HAM Radio Award
The above link seems to be in Lithuanian only, I'll check
later if it has an English version too.
Nemencine Hillfort is one of the most beautiful I visited.
The tree up on the top is slowly dying wiht locals helping it to
die faster by burning fires at the base hollow. I could only see
half of the tree since I was there last year.
The cache is a typical plastic box for food, placed inside a
plastic camouflage bag. Initial contents: a logbook with a pencil
and a few marbles for swag.
Good luck
