Geocache Description:

Located in the former Jungle Habitat, now part of Norvin Green State Park in West Milford.

Between 1972 and 1976, Jungle Habitat was owned by Warner Brothers. It contained over 1500 animals and had both a drive through section and a walk through section.

The walkthrough section (which I believe is the section in which the cache is located) included a petting zoo, camel and elephant rides, a reptile house, dolphin show, concessions and gift shop as well as Warner Brothers character themed shows. The drive through section was a safari style, where animals could walk up to the vehicles

While the park proved profitable, they had trouble getting repeat customers as they hadn't added new attractions. When the town of West Milford voted against allowing the park to expand, the park closed. In 1988, New Jersey purchased the land for $1,450,000. While the park is adjacent to, and technically part of Norvin Green State Forest, it is managed by Ringwood State Park. In 2007, the Ramapo Valley Cycling Club organized a massive cleanup of the park with 70 vounteers.

You can find more information about the former park, and a video on Weird New Jersey

The cache is a medium sized Lock-N-Lock above the entrance to the walkthrough section. Don't attempt to climb up the front, there is an easy passage to a road that passes above the tunnels. Once you're on the road on top, it's best to approach the cache from the south. If you go in the winter, your knees may get wet, but the plantlife will be a lot more dense in the summer. Please replace the cache exactly as found.

Welcome to Jungle Habitat. Have fun exploring the ruins! There's a nearby entrance station and a little bamboo forest further down the road.
