Geocache Description:

From San Fernando Road travel south bound on Sierra Highway about 1.7 miles. The entrance to the cache will be marked by concrete blocks with " Newhall Pass 1/4 mile <-". The hike is short and a little sandy/slippery. Be careful of rattlesnakes in the summer and spring.

"Beale's Cut" was formerly known as "Freemont Pass" and "San Fernando Pass". It was named after General Edward F. Beale, a veteran of the Mexican-American War. The first stage coach was driven through the pass by General Phineas Banning, in 1854, when it was only 30 feet deep. It was later deepened to 90 feet to help ease the travel between Newhall and the pueblo of Los Angeles. In 1910 Beale's Cut was replaced by the Newhall Tunnell and later gave way to modern day Sierra Highway.

For local Santa Clarita Valley residents, this is a historical stop worth making. Take a birds eye view from either side at the top if you dare. It is slippery but worth it.

The cache is an ammo box containing the following:

  • American flag stickers
  • Army jeep
  • watch compass
  • package of stickers
  • pencils
  • (2) AA batteries
  • slinkey
  • belt buckle
  • skunk pin
  • toy giraffe
Be safe and please remember to cover up the cache. There is not many areas in the "Cut" (hint) to hide it. Good luck!
