Red Dragon Canoe Club
The Red Dragon Canoe Club is another historic yacht club on the Delaware River. Founded in Camden as the Keystone Canoe Club in 1883, it moved to Philadelphia before settling in the Civil War-era Shipman Mansion in Edgewater Park in 1925. In 1980, the club admitted women for the first time. The Red Dragon offers sailing, paddling, regattas and social events. The mansion is open on Saturdays from 10-2 and Sundays from 1-4. "Among the attractions are a fleet room with a huge wheel that club members had rescued from a barge; canoes hung from ceilings and displayed in the second-floor hallway; a stairwell lined with photographs of all of the club's commodores; and a museum that houses several model ships, historic photographics, sailing trophies and nautical books."* Feel free to tour the mansion if it's open on the weekends, but keep a respectful distance otherwise. Someone lives in the apartment. Also, please stay away from the riverfront and do not attempt to find this cache after dusk. Several private homes surround the club. Please do not park or trespass on their property. There is an unactivated Dolphin TB for the FTF.
