holt mill pond preserve was purchased by the town of stonington in 1976 and is overseen by the town's conservation commission. i have lived in stonington for many, many and then some years, and i have never been here until today. it is a really beautiful saltwater marsh! if you want a brochure about the preserve, stop at island heritage trust on main street in deer isle village.
directions:
go down either side of the island and get on the airport road. find fire lane 56 (just across from judkins lane - close to the island medical center.) parking is very limited. park at the end of the field, by the tree that has fallen down. (n 44 10.761 w 068 40.149)
start your hike on the 4 wheeler trail that begins close to where you park. (the hiking trail goes past a small camper, but the owner has blocked it so people cannot walk past the camper.) the 4 wheeler trail is just a short distance through the woods that comes back out on the trail, just beyond the camper.
at the fork in the road with the sign that says "16", go right. at the next fork in the road, with the 3 trees marked with yellow blazes, go right again. cache is an ammo box.
