This was the location of the stately home of Victoria City Hall
architect and former mayor, John Teague (c1870-1966). This heritage
building was lost forever in 1966. One of the oldest trees in the
city, a giant Sequoia tree marks the site. North Park is one of the
oldest residential neighborhoods in Victoria, B.C., with landmarks
dating well back into the 19th century. On the route of the old
streetcar line up Caledonia Avenue from downtown Victoria.
From City of Victoria Parks Website - Royal Athletic Park has been
used as a playing field since the early nineteen hundreds. It was
in private hands until 1925, when it was purchase by the City of
Victoria. .
Royal Athletic Park has seen many changes over the years as its
usage changes with the demand from the public. It has been used for
track & field events, bicycle riding, soccer, box & field
lacrosse, English & Canadian rugby, football, baseball and slo
pitch. .
After a fire which destroyed most of the park, Royal Athletic Park
was rebuilt in 1967. The layout is highly functional for baseball
or any type of football. It is a fully enclosed park, with the main
entrance on Caledonia Avenue. .
Royal Athletic Park has been the home field for a New York Yankees
farm team, and many Nationally ranked soccer and football teams.
Gil McDougald played third base here on his way up to the New York
Yankees. .
Known as one of the best playing fields in Canada, it has hosted
Provincial and Canadian Championships for various sports.
Currently, Royal Athletic Park is home to the Traveller's Inn
Fastball team, Victoria United Soccer, and the Victoria Rebels
Junior Football Club. .
Its permanent seating is 4247 and depending on its configuration
and the event, it can hold up to 9,247 people. .
From July 1 to July 11, 2007, Royal Athletic Park was one of six
venues for the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup. The stadium was hosting
Group F and hosted Japan vs Czech Republic in a Round of Sixteen
game. Temporary bleachers were added to expand seating. An
announced total of 14,500 seats was later altered to 10,500, as
temporary grandstands were not erected behind the goal on the east
side.
Royal Athletic is the current home of the Vicotria Seals.
Victoriaseals.ca The Victoria Seals are an expansion team within
the Golden Baseball League, and will play 44 home games this year
in Victoria's Royal Athletic Park. The Golden Baseball League 2008
championship was won by the Orange County Flyers, managed by MLB
Hall-Of-Famer Gary Carter. Looking ahead to the 2009 campaign,
teams will play an 88-game schedule, not including playoffs, from
May through August. he Seals' owners are the Parker family, who
bring over 40 years of professional sports ownership and management
experience to the team. Their first foray into professional
baseball was in 1977. Since then they have gone on to own and
operate the Calgary Cannons of the Pacific Coast League from 1985
– 2002. They are the current owners of the Regina Pats of the
Western Hockey League. Over one million fans have attended GBL
games over the past three seasons!
The Golden Baseball League is dedicated to developing professional
independent baseball in western North America. Now five years old,
the GBL plays in a combination of city and University-owned
stadiums and work in collaboration with their communities to market
professional baseball. The GBL provides a supportive opportunity
for players and coaches to sign with Major League Baseball
organizations. To date, 80 GBL players have gone on to sign MLB
contracts.
