Iowa -song by Meredith Willson

During World War II Meredith Willson was an Army major who lead the music division of the American Armed Forces Radio (AFR). In its half-hour show, AFR would on occasion pay tribute to troops who hailed from a particular state. A song or two suitable to the state would be performed by some of the country's leading entertainers of the day.

When it came time to honor Iowa's troops, AFR found no song to use. Willson wrote Iowa especially for the show.

On January 12th of 1944, Bing Crosby introduced and performed Willson's song "Iowa" on the Armed Forces Radio broadcast called Mail Call in a salute to the fighting men from the great state of Iowa.

The Santa Anita OTC Band conducted by Skinnay Ennis backed up Crosby. The sheet music can be found in a book entitled "Meredith Willson - the Music and the Man" published by Hal Leonard.
