Löss am Sonnenberg

Der Löss am Eltviller Sonnenberg ist besonders erwähnenswert da hier die größte Schichtdicke (Mächtigkeit) in der Region vorhanden ist.

Löss oder Löß ist ein vom Wind transportiertes und auch vom Wind abgelagertes Sediment, das aus Feinmaterial – vor allem aus Schluff – besteht. Der allergrößte Teil des heute auf der Erde vorkommenden Lösses wurde im Pleistozän abgelagert.
Hier am Eltviller Sonnenberg weißt der Löss eine beachtliche Schichtdicke (Mächtigkeit) von 3 - 8m auf.
Der Begriff Löss wurde 1823 von Karl Cäsar von Leonhard in die geologisch-mineralogische Literatur eingeführt. Der Terminus ist als Fachbegriff in viele Sprachen eingegangen.

Eigenschaften:
Löss besteht zum allergrößten Teil aus Schluff. Der Tongehalt ist bei frischem Löss sehr variabel, 5 bis über 20 %, und kann durch Verwitterung noch ansteigen. Löss ist mit stark wechselnden Anteilen Feinsand durchmischt; dessen Anteil am Gemenge beträgt im Durchschnitt 20 %, kann aber auch höher liegen. Bei Sandgehalten über 50 %, aber noch reichlich vorhandenem Schluff spricht man von Sandlöss, der regional auch als Flottsand bezeichnet wird. Dennoch gilt Löss als gut sortiertes Sediment. Mineralogisch besteht Löss zum größten Teil (50 % – 80 %) aus Quarzkörnern mit 8 % – 20 % kalkigen Bruchstücken. Beimengungen von Eisenhydroxiden färben Löss gelblich bis gelblich-rot. Andere Minerale, wie Feldspäte, vulkanische Gläser oder Mafische Minerale, kommen i.d.R. in geringen Mengen vor, können jedoch regional auch dominant werden, wie in Argentinien oder auf der Nordinsel Neuseelands. Löss ist gewöhnlich ungeschichtet, unverfestigt und sehr porös, kann jedoch bei späterer Umlagerung durch Wasser eine Schichtung erhalten und wird dann Schwemmlöss genannt. Allgemein werden Sedimente, die durch Umlagerung aus Löß entstanden sind, als Lössderivate bezeichnet. Die poröse Struktur erklärt sich wahrscheinlich durch die Grasstängel, zwischen denen sich der Löss bei der Sedimentation abgesetzt hat. Konkretionen von Kalk im Löss entstehen durch Lösung und Wiederausfällung der fein verteilten kalkigen Bruchstücke und werden als Lösskindl oder Lössmännchen bezeichnet. Die Einzelpartikel im Löss haben eine vorherrschend eckige Form. Daher rührt seine hohe Standfestigkeit, welche die Bildung von Lösswänden an Flussufern, in Hohlwegen und die Entstehung von Ackerterrassen begünstigt.

Entstehung:
Löss entsteht, wenn Schluff und feinster Sand bei fehlender Vegetationsdecke ausgeblasen wird und sich nach einem längeren Transport (einige zehn bis mehrere hundert Kilometer) in Bereichen mit dichterer Vegetation wieder ablagert. In Mitteleuropa wurde Löss vor allem in den Eiszeiten gebildet, als infolge der ganzjährig niedrigen Temperaturen kaum Vegetation existierte; die Vorlandgebiete der Gletscher sowie die Flussauen waren sogar weitgehend frei von Bewuchs. Verantwortlich für die Löß-Entstehung waren sowohl die vorherrschenden Westwinde als auch die in den Kaltzeiten häufigen, trocken-kalten Fallwinde. Letztere wehten von den fast ganz vergletscherten Alpen oder vom skandinavischen Inlandeis herab und nahmen im Vorland feinkörniges Material auf. Während der Sand nur relativ kurze Transportstrecken zurücklegte und in Form von Binnendünen abgelagert wurde, wurde feineres Material wie Schluff deutlich weiter verblasen und eher großflächig als Lössdecke abgelagert. Vor allem entlang der Flussgebiete - etwa am Oberrhein und der Donau - wurde der Löss von Westwinden ausgeblasen und weit jenseits des Flusses wieder abgelagert: z.B. im Kraichgau östlich, im Donautal beim Wagram nordöstlich des Flusses. Im Rhein-Maas-Delta liegen die Lössflächen auf dem linken Ufer der Flüsse, also weit vom westlich gelegenen Nachbarfluss entfernt, während das Ostufer als Heideterrasse vom nur wenig weit gewehten Sand bedeckt ist. Die Bildung von Löss vollzieht sich aber auch unter warm-trockenen Klimabedingungen, wenn aus Wüsten Staub ausgeblasen wird und sich in den Randgebieten, in denen wieder Vegetation gedeihen kann, ablagert.

Lössderivate und Lösssedimente:
Bereits während, aber auch nach der Ablagerung kann Löss durch andere Prozesse als Wind umgelagert werden. Je nach Prozess unterscheidet man Kriechlöss (schwach am Hang umgelagert), Fließlöss (durch Solifluktion umgelagert, enthält meist ein Grobskelett des unter dem Löss anstehenden Materials), Schwemmlöss (durch Abspülung umgelagert), Hangrutschungslöss, Infusionslöss (Umlagerung in einen See), Kryoturbationslöss (durch Frostwechsel durchmischt). Weiterhin greift die Verwitterung vor allem die oberen Bereiche des Lösses an. Dadurch werden der Kalk gelöst und Tonminerale gebildet. Es entsteht Lösslehm. Alle genannten Abarten des Lösses bezeichnet man als Lössderivate.

The loess in the Eltviller solar mountain is especially worth mentioning there here the biggest layer thickness (thickness) in the region exists.


Loess or loess is transported by wind and wind-deposited sediment, consisting of fine material - primarily silt - is. Mineralogical Loess consists largely (50% - 80%) of quartz grains with 8% - 20% limestone fragments. Admixtures of iron hydroxides loess color yellow to yellowish-red. Other minerals such as feldspars, volcanic glass or mafic minerals, come i.d.R. present in small amounts, but can be regionally dominant also, as in Argentina or in the North Island of New Zealand. Loess is usually unstratified, unconsolidated and very porous, but can be obtained from subsequent rearrangement of water stratification and then called alluvial loess. General sediments caused by rearrangement of loess are called Lössderivate. The porous structure is explained probably by the grass stems, between which the loess was deposited during sedimentation. Concretions of calcium in the loess caused by solution and reprecipitation of the finely divided calcareous fragments and are called Lösskindl or Lössmännchen. The individual particles in the loess have a predominantly square shape. This explains its high stability, the formation of loess hills along river banks, in ravines, and encouraged the development of agricultural terraces.

Created:
Loess is formed when silt and fine sand is blown in the absence of vegetation cover and after a long transport (several tens to several hundreds of kilometers) in areas with denser vegetation deposited. In Central Europe, loess is produced mainly in the ice ages, as a result of low temperatures throughout the year there was no vegetation; the foreshore areas of the glacier and the floodplains were even largely free of vegetation. Responsible for the loess formation were both the prevailing westerly winds and the frequent periods in the cold, dry and cold fall winds. The latter fell from the almost entirely glaciated Alps and the Scandinavian ice sheet down and took in the foothills of fine grained material. While the sand covers only a relatively short transport distances and was deposited in the form of inland dunes, was much finer material such as silt blown further and deposited as loess cover more extensively. Especially along the river areas - such as the Upper Rhine and the Danube - the loess was blown by the westerly winds and deposited far beyond the river again: e.g. Kraichgau east, in the Danube valley in the north-east of the river Wagram. In the Rhine-Meuse Delta, the Lössareas are on the left bank of the river, far away from the river west neighbor, while the east bank covered terrace of a pagan little far-drifted sand. The formation of loess is taking place but also warm and dry climate, when blown dust from deserts and in the peripheral areas, which can again flourish vegetation, deposited.

Loess sediments and Lössderivate:
Already a while, but after the loess deposit can be moved by other processes as wind. Depending on the process, a distinction is Kriechlöss (slightly rearranged on a slope), Fließlöss (rearranged by solifluction, usually contains a rough skeleton of the loess in the upcoming material), alluvial loess (rearranged by rinsing), Hangrutschungslöss, Infusionslöss (rearrangement in a lake), Kryoturbationslöss (mixed by freeze-thaw cycles). Furthermore, the weathering attacks mainly the upper areas of the loess. This will solve the lime and clay minerals formed. The result is loam. All named varieties of the loess is called Lössderivate.
