Geocache Description:

A walk up to the Iron Age Hill Fort from the suggested parking to collect the missing numbers for the cache co-ordinates and admire the views.Spectacular 360° views (on a clear day) of the Wirral peninsular and the North Wales mountains. I advise when you get to the Fort to walk around the embankment clockwise, or anticlockwise, to appreciate the great views. Pie and Fort!! Nothing needs to be dismantled in the completing of this cache - PaF!

The cache itself is not at the stated co-ordinates. To find the actual co-ordinates you'll need to follow the stated co-ordinates which will take you up the Hill Fort on Halkyn Mountain Common to a 3ft square metal cover (of which there are 6 in total, 4 together) with a sticker on its side which has an address and a postcode. The post-code is SYab cBE, where ab and c are replacing the numbers of the postcode and should be substituted into the cache co-ordinates which are:Stage 2 (main cache) North 53 1a.89aWest 003 10.(b+c)8b

Iron Age Fort.Located on Halkyn Mountain, the Iron Age hillfort occupies an isolated grassy hill, with a commanding outlook. There are fine views to the west along the chain of hillforts on the Clwydian Range, and east and south across the Dee Estuary to the Wirral and Lancashire. Moel y Gaer is important because of the results of excavations in the 1970s. Within the fort different phases of roundhouse construction were found, including a period when a rectangular building was constructed. As well as traces of roundhouses, three small 'four-posters' were detected. They were probably storehouses or granaries kept off the ground to protect food from vermin. Acidic soil conditions meant that few objects were preserved but heaps of water-worn pebbles were found against one of the earlier phases of ramparts. These are believed to have been caches of slingstones, possible evidence of warfare and raiding. The prominent inner rampart includes an inturned entrance on the south-east side and the site was defended by ditches as well as a low bank 10m outside the main ditch on the south and west. None of the roundhouses or other buildings are now visible - and don't be confused by the recent construction work on a reservoir. A triangulation pillar has been positioned on top of a Bronze Age round barrow.Halkyn Mountain is an urban common which means you can walk freely across it. However, please take great care near old mine workings as the common is covered with vertical mineshafts in various stages of repair. Please report any re-opened shafts to the Grosvenor Estate Office at 01244 684400.Hill Fort (visit link) Wales (visit link)
