Cataract Falls Towering Pines Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

2qwerqE: Gone, gone with the flood waters. I visited the cache Sunday 8/10 and the entire area is absolutely devastated by the floods. Though the forest and the cache has survived at least five floods before this one, it is scrubbed of any undergrowth now, and all the deadfall has been swept down stream, including the cache. Unless it's buried in the deep sloppy silt.

Nothing is growing below the waterline, (at least 8 feet high). The pines in the sky look green and happy, but below the flood line, all is brown, dead, smelly and noxious. Even though the flood was over 2 months ago, there is no hint of regeneration here. No birds in the trees. No wildlife anywhere. Not even cicadas, though they fill the air with noise at the Upper Falls. Nothing alive but millions of flies and mosquitos. The forest is sad and empty and brown and smelly, and does not look likely to get any better this year. Maybe I'll check on it next spring. Seriously bumming.

Geocache Description:

A peaceful and astonishingly beautiful place. There is a $4 entrance fee, if anyone is collecting it; but often no one is.

The rushing of the nearby falls. The soft aromatic pine needles covering the forest floor. The breeze soughing high overhead among the giants that surround you. This place soothed my soul today, and made me smile all the way home. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.Coords were a bit tough to average beneath this canopy, but I did my best. Let me know if you think they are too far off.The hike is an easy, level walk along a wide trail if you park here: N39 26.372 by W086.49.060. But you can come in from the Upper Falls parking lot if you like. That way has a steep hill to hike, but it's a little closer. I rated the terrain a 2, because I figure as many will do that hill as not.Cache is a blue Coleman thermos cooler. Please recover it well.

Upper Falls after 2 dry months

Upper Falls in flood stage

Known issue: This cache lies in a flood plain, and is inundated a couple or three times each year in the spring and fall flood seasons. The cache container has weathered and survived months long floods several times, and doubtless will again. so if the water's high, simply try again in drier weather.
