Geocache Description:

Multi-cache in the Naugatuck State Forest at Beacon Falls/Naugatuck. Closed at sunset.

Warnings:
  • This cache is STRONGLY not recommended in icy conditions. Cache will be extremely difficult to find in any snow or ice and likely frozen in place.
  • One stage is close to an unguarded cliff. At this stage, please keep animals leashed and kids close by. Or kids leashed and animals close by.
  • Hunting IS allowed in this forest. Wear orange during the season.

From Route 842 (N Main St) in Beacon Falls, go over the steel trestle bridge. Turn right on Lopus Rd, go up the hill, turn right again onto Cold Springs Rd. Soon, it becomes an unpaved road that runs along the railroad tracks and Naugatuck River. Park at N41°27.319 W073°03.798. You'll see the huge glacial erratic. Older kids will love scrambling to the top, although it DOES have a dangerous drop on one side. Check out the bolt ladder on the steep side.

There are several good trails here and only a little bushwacking is required. Some sections of the trail are very steep. You may hear rumblings and explosions from Mount Doom to the NW. But, don't worry, it's almost a mile away. From the parking lot, proceed to the "Gates of Mordor" at N41°27.463 W073°03.964 From here steeply ascend to the first stage at N 41° 27.337 W 073° 03.921 During good weather, there may be many orcs - or worse - about. Watch for Nazgûl riding the thermals. After stage 1, take the steep, rocky "Path of the Dead" passing the "Eye of Sauron" - terrain 4
