So far only a select few geocachers have been able to solve the puzzle for the parent cache "The Far Side of the World". Here is a new cache that hopefully will allow additional folks into that elite group. In doing this new one you will get a double reward. First, you will be given some additional hints that may help you solve the parent puzzle. Then, you will have the opportunity to crack a new puzzle, my first to employ the latest craze of decrypting a code.
Although there are already plenty of hints for the parent cache some clarification will help, so start with this site for a list of potential regions of interest. Since Argentina and Antarctica are out, that limits the regions possible for the two pairs of smaller cities you are seeking. Cities in the first pair are within 100 miles of the equator and have matching clues 3, 6, 8 in the north and 1, 9, 12 in the south. In the second pair, both inland cities on rivers far from the equator, the matching clues are 4, 5, 11 in the north and 2, 7, 10 in the south. If you are still stumped, do some googling.
Code breaking will be required for the son's puzzle. All you have to do is decode some text and discover six numbers that will be used to compute an offset from the bogus coordinates at the top. Decryption of my code may be a little different than you have seen before. But don’t worry, it’s easy once you understand the twist. For the offset computation, maintain the order of the six decrypted numbers as you separate them into two groups of three, concatenate the digits in each group and divide by one thousand. If a result is negative subtract, otherwise add the offsets, latitude then longitude.
Adjustment 10/23/2011:
Because of construction changes at GZ the final has been moved to a new location. Adjust calculated coordinates by subtracting .003 from latitude and subtracting .007 from longitude. No need to step into plantings. Sit facing plantings and reach down to retrieve cache. No need to move any rocks. Be careful not to push cache out of reach.
