When Japan occupied Taiwan in 1895,the Japanese army moved
southward,suppressing opposition along the way.Mt.Manapan was site
of two fierce battles which the aborigines waged against the
occupiers.and the Atayal people suffered severe casualties.The
Japanese erected a monument to commemorate their dead,and the
Chinese rebuilt the memorial as their own in 1984.
