How Geocaching Works
This is an offset cache, but since it involves two reference points it is published as a Mystery/Puzzle to alert you to the fact that it is a little different than other multi-caches.
This cache will take you initially to two cemeteries that are located adjacent to one another. The cemetery to the north, or in the front as you enter from the main road, is Old Sacred Heart cemetery. (New Sacred Heart is across the road, part of or otherwise known as Woodlawn.)
Behind Old Sacred Heart is a "Potter's Field" cemetery known as the Shawano County Cemetery. A potter's field is traditionally the place for the burial of unknown or indigent people or those whose burial was paid for by the County because they could not afford otherwise. The term comes from Matthew 27:7 in the New Testament of the Bible. Unlike the other potter's field at Maple Lane south of the city, this field has many grave markers, although some graves appear to be unmarked.
To find the cache:
Reference point 1 will take you to a marker in Shawano County cemetery for Theodore Schmidt. Let the year of his DEATH = ABCD.
Reference point 2 will take you to a marker for James Honich. We are betting that Mr. Honich would have chosen a place where he could rest in peace, had he been able to fortell the future, so we chose this little plot to pay him and his neighbors some extra respect. Let the year of his BIRTH = WXYZ.
The cache is located at:
N 44 4Y.(Y+Z)(W+Y)(Y)
W 88 3C.(D-6)(C-1)(B)
(The parentheses just separate the digits; you do not need to multiply anything. You will have to leave the cemetery you are in for the final, but the distance is walkable.)
There are many rural cemeteries in Wisconsin. Geocaching is a great way to get out and see some of these remote places, discover some interesting and unique markers, and to help ensure that those that have gone before us are not forgotten. With cemetery caches, the cache container is not hidden on or connected in any way to any grave site or marker. Occasionally, some information from a marker may be used to obtain final cache coordinates. Please be respectful of the cemetery and anyone visiting it.
About the WSQ-SCC Series
WSQ stands for "Wisconsin Spirit Quest, which is used by many Wisconsin cemetery cache owners. SCC stands for Shawano County Cemeteries, and the number between the two represents the location of the cemetery on a master map, which you can find by clicking HERE. The name after SCC is the name of the Township, then comes the name of the cemetery.
There are 99 cemeteries in Shawano County, and nearly all now have geocaches in them, bringing new visitors to these places to remember those who have gone before us. You just might find a long-lost relative or two.
These caches are designed to be easy to find, are usually a container and log only, and focus on “forgotten,” out-of-the-way, rural cemeteries. Also, any multi-stage caches are designed to bring you to special features of a particular cemetery.
