This
is our 4th consecutive year participating in the Ohio Department of
Transportation's
Adopt-A-Highway Program as a NWOGEO and Groundspeak CITO
Event.
We
meet at the American Legion parking lot, at the coordinates at the
top of this page, to coordinate our CITO, and hold a
"tailgate" safety briefing.
Being
close to the middle of our adopted section, it makes a good base of
operations. If you can't arrive in time, this will also be a good
place for you to come and find someone who can get you up to
speed.
In the past, with plenty of
volunteers, the CITOs took barely an hour to
complete.
Our CITO events are actually a good
time, and we often find places to grab some food and socialize or
hunt caches after our events. Click
here to see photos of previous events.
WHO/WHERE:
Northwest Ohio
Geocachers are the proud maintainers of a two mile
section of US-24/Anthony Wayne Trail, west of Waterville near Grand
Rapids, with a portion of our section bordering Providence
Metropark.
Our
obligation is to pick up litter four times a year along our adopted
highway section. In return, ODOT has posted nice free
advertising for us on signs (see image above), at each each end of
our adopted section.
Coordinates of our
the sign at the eastern end of our highway
section:
N 41º 25.974'
W 083º
49.871'
Coordinates or our
the sign at the western end of our highway
section:
N
41º 25.029' W
083º
51.446'
ODOT
will also post orange "SHOULDER WORK
AHEAD" signs at each end of our section for each of our
clean-up events.
We
are responsible for picking up litter between the berm of the road
and the utility pole line.
If
you can not or do not feel like walking and picking up litter, we
can also use a driver or two to drop off people and supplies,
as well as distribute water or other supplies we may
need.
WHAT TO BRING:
ODOT
supplies bright colored safety vests that everyone must wear during
cleanup. Alternately, we have Safety Green NWOGEO T-Shirts
available for purchase via our NWOGEO website, or you bring your
own Safety vest.
While
ODOT provides trash bags, some of us bring extra
bags.
Wear
sturdy shoes and bring gloves in case there are some dangerous
items along the way (eg. broken glass and uhh, containers filled
with a certain disgusting liquid.)
Some of us also bring along Latex gloves to wear under our work
gloves.
Y
ou may also want to bring insect repellant
with at least 20% DEET or 7% Picaridin, as we have had a few tick
incidents.
(Click here for tick and repellant information) Sunscreen is
also a good idea.
If
you have FRS/GMRS radios, bring 'em
along, and set them to channel 2.
WHY:
This
is one way of giving back to the community as well as making a good
name for our organization. So let’s have lots of people out there,
do it quickly, and have fun in the process!
Please be aware
that by participating in this cache event, you are agreeing to the
guidelines and liability limitations as described by the disclaimer
that can be found on this and all other cache pages. Additionally,
you agree and understand that you are participating on your
own, and that NWOGEO has no insurance or liability in the unlikely
event of a mishap. Children are welcome and often attend, however
parents must use their discretion concerning how their
children participate.
Any
questions may be posted here as a note in the logs, or on our
website below, and someone will answer them.
Hope to see you
there!
