The Avila
Adobe--The Oldest Existing House in Los Angeles

Built by Don Francisco Avila
as his townhouse, it is the oldest existing house in Los Angeles.
It also served as headquarters for Commodore Robert Stockton during
the Mexican American War, and later as a boarding house and
restaurant. It now houses a museum representing the lifestyle of
Los Angeles in the 1840s.
This entire area is an
interesting one. Please spend some time checking out some of the
historic sites, and maybe even the tacky little shops. (Try some
catus candy.)
To log this cache, find the
plaque on the front of the building. It commemorates Stockton.
E-mail me the two dates on
the plaque.

This is the entrance to the Adobe. The plaque can be seen from Olvera Street. You don't have to go inside, but it's an interesting location.

November 19 by caverdon (1394 found) I've been in Los Angeles on a business trip for a week, and if I found any spare time I tried to pick up a few caches in the downtown area. I was glad to see there were plenty around, and that many included history and very interesting places.I had a serious injury to my knee just over a month ago, and I'm scheduled to have surgery next month. So I'm wearing a full knee brace in order to walk around and prevent further damage to my knee (by a twisting motion). Walking is OK as it's good exercise for the leg as long as I take occasional breaks. At the end of the day I was all-done with business, and so after dinner I walked around some areas downtime to get a few pictures & caches. Altogether I probably walked close to 2 miles in the area east of Bunker Hill before returning to my hotel. Visiting this virtual cache was a really good hike from my hotel, but I made it! I arrived too late to enjoy some of the area's activities, but it was a nice place to visit nonetheless. Found the virtual cache easily. All shops on this street were closed (it was after 9:00PM), although there was a group of men a short distance away who were involved with some type of construction. Afterwards I visited the plaza with the large gazebo at the head of the street. Very nice! Answers will be sent right after this log.

[view this log] | October 31 by Terza (590 found) I'm down in L.A. for the week from San Francisco with the family so I thought I'd sneak in a quick virtual cache while checking out Olvera Street. What a charming area!
[view this log] | October 17 by camsoradap (2304 found) The house was closed by the time we got here but we ate nearby so I got the info for the cache.
