Big Troughs of the Soča
River troughs are a type of shallow and narrow rocky valleys with precipituos faces. The Soča valley boasts the most numerous and most characteristic river troughs in Slovenia. Very picturesque are the Big Troughs a short distance below the village of Soča where the river is squeezed into a 750-metre-long and 10-to-15-metre deep gorge.
The dephth of the river rises downstream and depends heavily on the quantity of water, which may vary by as much as 10 m. In the dry season the troughs are filled up to 3 metres high, after heavy rainfall up to the top, or the water even overflows.
The troughs are carved in stratified
Eartly Cretaceous limestone, they are less than 2 metres wide in bedrock severely, forming many whirlpools. The fall of the river is significant, over 30 metres per 1 km.
In 1990 the Soča was designated an outstanding natural feature according to the Ordinance on the Designation of the Cultural and Historical Monuments and Outstanding Natural Features in the Municipality of Tolmin, Slovenia.
