Adventure-cache hidden in the cliffs of Mortitx. Not to be underestimated
The last canyon of Mortitx - also known as Torrent Fondo - is one of the nicest canyons on Mallorca. After a long and pretty wild approach the canyon is an extremely jolly affair - many jumps and slides, rock arches and a great exit into the sea. Too bad that all this fun takes place in a very remote setting. And when you reach the mouth of the canyon, the adventure hasn't ended - A new 'via ferrata', secured with a 6-8mm iron rope leads up the cliffs, some parts very exposed. Finally the rope dumps you into a labyrinth of sharp rock spires that's quite challenging to navigate before you reach the safety of the green ropegrass-sea of the Ariant plains again.
Park near the winery of Mortitx, climb over the gate and follow the main road until you reach a gate and after this gate a tiny hut. Cross the dry stream and stay on the road until a easily visible footpath turns right (HP1). Now follow the stonecairns into the upper canyon of Mortitx (HP2) and climb down until you reach the first bigger waterfall below a large rocktower called the Bec d' Oca. Jump down this first obstacle or climb around it and walk through another broad valley until you reach the actual start of the canyon.
Approach by canyoning:
Equipment needed: neoprene wetsuit, 40m rope, descending device, gloves for the climb back up. Not recommended during summer since the water-quality in the pools degenerates. In April 2014 the iron rope was damaged at a few places, until this is fixed one of your party should be able to climb and secure UIAA III-IV+, so take 40m of dynamic rope and 3-4 quickdraws. This has been fixed since then but to be safe one of your group should be able to climb passages of this difficulty.
Just fun: jumps, slides and big pools. You'll probably need to abseil just once - at the big 20m waterfall. Be very careful at the last waterfalls when the sea is violent - the waves can reach far into the canyon. At the end of the canyon climb up the ramp to the right and search for the cache on the righthand side of the wall several meters before the first iron rope.
Ascent: follow the iron ropes and stone cairns. In the middle of the ascent a long passage isn't secured. From a big ledge go right, then climb up a steep slope to be beginning of an even steeper chimney with two static ropes hanging down - that's the most difficult part of the whole climb. After the chimney another iron rope helps you over the last and steepest part of the cliffs (Grade C-D).
Once you reach the end of the iron ropes take your time navigating through the rock labyrinth - look for stonechairns and traces of earlier hikers on the rock. Once you reach the safety of the ropegrass either go down right into the valley of Torrent Fondo, or go up left and traverse the hillside until you reach the abandoned building of Rafael d'Ariant and the approach-path. Time needed: 6-10 hours
Approach by foot:
harder than the canyoning approach - difficult pathfinding and downclimbing. Equipment needed: gloves, a ferrata-set, at least 30m of safety rope and descending devices
Follow the canyoning approach until you reach the actual start of the canyon (a narrow slit with a big choke block) - climb the shallow valley to your right for a bit until you find rockcairns leading to the left. Follow these rockcairns through a labyrinth of spires and slots until you reach the upper part of the via ferrata (HP3)
Now climb down the first difficult part. Next a narrow and very steep 15m chimney followed by a delicate downclimb over a steep slope (having a rope helps) waits for you. Traverse the wall until you reach the next iron rope which zig-zags down into the canyon. Find your price after the end of the last iron rope. Please note again that this isn't a regular via ferrata - not every part of the route is secured. In April 2014 the rope was damaged in a few places on the last part. You might have to rappel there.

Der letzte Canyon des Mortitx - auch als Torrent Fondo bekannt - ist eine der schönsten Schluchten Mallorcas. Nach einen langen und recht wilden Zustiegs beginnt eine Schlucht der Kategorie 'Aquafunpark'. Viele Sprünge und Rutschen und ein sehr fotogener Abseiler warten in einer herrlichen Landschaft. Abgerundet wird das Ganze dann durch eine spektakuläre Mündung ins Meer. Mit Erreichen dieser Mündung ist das Abenteuer aber noch nicht vorbei. Zunächst führt ein Klettersteig, gesichert mit einem dünnen Drahtseil und stellenweise steil und ordentlich ausgesetzt, die Klippen hinauf, dann muss man in einen Labyrinth von Felszacken und -spalten noch seine Orientierungsfähigkeiten beweisen bevor man das sichere Dissgrass-Meer der Ariant-Hochebene erreicht.
Parken kann man beim Weingut Mortitx. Überklettert das Tor und folgt der Strasse bis zu einem weiteren Tor bei einer kleinen Hütte. Weiter die Strasse entlang, einen trockenen Bach überqueren bis bei HP1 ein deutlicher Steig nach rechts abzweigt. Folgt diesen Steig bis in die obere Schlucht von Mortitx (HP2). Ab hier kann man sich nicht mehr verlaufen. Immer bergab bis zu einem grösseren Wasserfall und -becken unterhalb des riesigen Felsturms Bec d' Oca. Das erste Becken kann je nach Lust und Wassermenge entweder links umklettert oder gesprungen werden. Nach einer weiteren kurzen Wanderstrecke durch ein offenes Tal steht man endlich vorm eigentlichen Beginn der Klamm.
Canyoningvariante:
Benötigte Ausrüstung: Neoprenanzug, 40m Seil, Abseilgerät, Handschuhe fürs zurückklettern. Im Hochsommer aufgrund der dann schlechen Wasserqualität in den stehenden Becken nicht zu empfehlen.
Sprünge und Rutschen wechseln einander ab, das Seil braucht man gewöhlich nur beim 20m hohen Wasserfall. Bei rauer See sollte man sehr vorsichtig sein - Brecher können dann weit in die Klamm hineinreichen. Viel zu früh steht man am Ende der Klamm. Rechts die Rampe hinaufklettern wo man noch vor Beginn des ersten Drahtseils den Cache finden kann.
Aufstieg: folgt dem Drahtseil und den Steinmännern. Im April 2014 war das Drahtseil an einigen Stellen beschädigt, bis das Seil repariert ist, sollte mindestens einer im Team imstande sein UIAA III-IV+ im Vorstieg zu klettern und abzusichern. Ein zusätzliches 40m Dynamikseil sowie 3-4 Expressschlingen müssen bis dahin mitgenommen werden. Das beschädigte Drahtseil wurde inzwischen ausgetauscht, allerdings ist es absolut vorteilhaft daß einer aus eurer Gruppe diesen Schwierigkeitsgrad im Vorstieg klettern kann, falls wieder mal etwas passiert. In der Mitte des Anstiegs gibts auf einer längeren Strecke keine Sicherungen - hier nach rechts zu einer markanten Rampe queren und diese vorsichtig bis zu einem Kamin hinaufklettern. Der Kamin ist die Schlüsselstelle der Tour - recht mühsam gehts mit Hilfe zweier Statikseile in die Höhe. Nach dem Kamin folgt noch ein steiler aber gut gesicherter Pfeiler (C-D) bevor das Drahtseil endet.
Es folgt ein unübersichtliches Felslabyrinth - orientiert euch nach den Steinmännern und Steigspuren an den messerscharfen Felsen. Wieder auf sicheren Boden angelangt könnt ihr rechts ins schon bekannte Tal absteigen oder in einen Linksbogen Richtung Hexenhöhlen/Rafael d'Ariant aufsteigen Hilfspunkte HP3, HP4 und HP5
Klettersteigvariante:
meiner Meinung nach schwieriger als die Canyoningvariante.
Recht schwere Orientierung und viel zum Abklettern.
Benötigte Ausrüstung: Handschuhe, Ferrata-Set, Seil (min. 30m, besser länger) und Abseilgerät. Nochmal: es handelt sich hierbei nicht um einen regulären Klettersteig, viele ungesicherte und ausgesetzte Stellen zum Abklettern.
Folgt der Canyoningvariante bis zum eigentlichen Einstieg in die Schlucht. Jetzt nach rechts aufsteigen bis Steinmänner nach links ins Felslabyrinth führen. Diesen Steinmännern und den Hilfspunkten HP4 und HP5 bis zum oberen Ende des Klettersteigs bei HP3 folgen. Nachdem man den ersten steilen Pfeiler abgeklettert ist steht man vor der Schlüsselstelle - ein steiler 15m Kamin gefolgt von einer etwas weniger steilen rauen Platte. Hier kann ein Seil sehr nützlich sein. Danach die Wand queren bis man wieder auf ein Drahtseil trifft das im Zick-Zack durch die Klippen in die Klamm hinunter führt. Der Cache versteckt sich nach dem Ende des letzten Drahtseils. Im April 2014 waren einige Drahtseile beschädigt. Bis der Schaden behoben ist muss hier u.U. abgeseilt werden. Benötigte Zeit für beide Varianten: 6-10h
