Located North of Soap Lake aon SR 17 over looking Lake Lenore to
the West and Alkali Lake to the North A 200 ft elevation gain in
1/2 mile distance. A faded sign at the entrance says "CLOSED FROM
10:00 pm. TO 4:00 am."
After doing Take a Fly Leave a Fly cache (GCF410) I could not
resist going and placing a cache up around the Lenore Caves. This
is a must do experience going and looking at the numerous sizes of
caves in the basalt rock cliffs. From the trail head the path is
asphalt up to the 31 steps. After climbing the setps the main trail
heads South and has several side paths off to different caves. Some
of these paths take you out to the cliff edges. (PLEASE WATCH YOUNG
CHILDREN AS THE CLIFFS ARE NOT PROTECTED) I would not advise doing
the hike in hours of darkness. The caves are not very deep, so
lights are not an issue during day time use. The coords are right
on to find the cache. I know, I had to go back to the cache twice.
As I was putting a TB into a Baggie I mistakenly dropped my car
keys into the same bag. After hiding the cache, I took a few
pictures and left. When I got back to the car, I did not have my
car keys. Fortunately the car was unlocked. I spent a while looking
for the keys, and then realized I also did not fill out the Log
Book for the cache title. Now is getting late and the sun had set.
Armed with flash lights, I head back to the cache for the second
time. It was dark when I got there. The GPS took me within 2 ft. of
the cache. Secured the car keys, Filled out the Log book and hiked
out. Even though I did not see or hear any snakes, They may be
around.
