This is the fifth in my cache series dedicated to geocachers I have met while geocaching. It is a simple two stage cache starting on Alki Beach and ending in a nearby park.
This cache series is based on the names of geocachers I have met while geocaching. I met the captain of Wandering Pirates on Sept. 18th, 2002 at the Jester’s Micro Multi Cache. He arrived at the final cache site just as I was leaving the park and we discussed planting a cache together. That never happened but I liked the concept we came up with so much that it inspired me to start this cache series. As usual I gave Wandering Pirates a one week head start before I post their cache so they could be the first to log their cache, but they graciously decided to only verify the coordinates for me and leave the first finder honors to next intrepid geocacher to locate it.
Parking can be difficult in this area but spots can usually be found if you are willing to look a few blocks away from the beach. The area around the Alki Community Center near N47 34.770, W122 24.482 is a good location between the waypoint and the cache.
The posted coordinates are on Alki Beach near the spot where the SeaFair Pirates come ashore every year. I doubt you will see any pirate ships during your hunt, but you should be able to locate the answers to the following questions about Alki Beach and some of the ships that used to stop there. These answers will lead you to the Wandering Pirate’s Dream, a wooden treasure chest.
A. What was the fourth number of the year the “City of Seattle” began taking people to Akli?
B. What was the cost of passage on the “City of Seattle”?
C. What was the third number of the year the “Falcon” carried 72,888 people to Alki?
D. What was the fourth number of the year ferry service was established between Alki and Manchester?
EF. What were the third and fourth numbers of the year a storm destroyed the Alki ferry landing?
The treasure chest is located at: N47 34.BFE, W122 24.CDA.
The cache is located in a park within walking distance of the beach. Reception was fairly good with my GPS consistently getting me to within 15 feet. The cache is about 30 feet off of the trail but if you approach it from the correct direction no bushwacking is required. If you come from the wrong direction you will encounter a lot of nettles so when you get close to the cache, look around for a good place to leave the trail.
This cache has two containers. The outer container is a homemade wooden treasure chest with a hinge-less top built from lumber I salvaged from my old deck and cedar fence. The inner container is a 1 gallon Rubbermaid Roughneck box in a plastic bag. Try not to move the chest to much when opening it. It is made from very old wood and I don’t know how long it will last. You may need to step over and crouch under a few branches to reach it, but once again no real bushwhacking is required.
The original contents of the cache were; The Baby Baby Mac's Geocoin from GRCC – II, the tour guide book, “Big Island of Hawaii” by Greg Ward from the Bayside Book Cache, a bag of smiley face buttons from the Barking Dog cache, a pirate captain figure from the Tiki Treasures cache, a Lai from the 2001 REI STP rest stop, a Mickey Mouse pirate figure and a Disney parrot figure sitting on a gold filled ore car.
Warning, my last hint is very specific so if you want a challenge, don’t translate it right away.
