Geocache Description:

A safe place to watch the planes!

RAF Leeming opened as a bomber base on 3 June 1940 as part of the expansion of the Royal Air Force to counter the Luftwaffe.

After the war, the base did not close and its role changed to flying training. This continued until 1985 when the base began to be upgraded to become primarily a Tornado F3 base by 1988. The first squadron to reform to fly the Tornado F3 was No XI(F) Squadron. They were joined by No 23 Squadron and then No 25(F) Squadron. No 23 Squadron was disbanded in 1994. More recently XI(F) Squadron was dispanded in Oct 05, soon to reform at RAF Conningsby flying the Typhoon.

The base remains a Tornado F3 Main Operating Base today and when you visit this cache you may be able to see some flying. Ear plugs and binoculars may be handy!!
