Geocache Description:

A small cache located in Pennington Flash Country Park near Leigh. There is room inside for some small swaps and TBs.

A hibernaculum is a nest in which an animal hibernates. Many small creatures choose to sleep through the cold winter months in the UK, which on some frosty mornings can seem like an excellent idea.

When an animal hibernates its body temperature drops, its breathing becomes slower and its whole metabolic rate slows right down. This can last for several weeks or months depending on the animal and the outside temperature. If all goes well the creature should wake up as spring brings warmer temperatures and more plentiful food.

A small hedgehog, Erinaceus europaeus

Our most famous hibernating creature is the hedgehog, but bats also hibernate, as do some small rodents such as dormice and many insects such as the ladybird.

A typical hibernaculum for a hedgehog would be a nest of leaves and straw, inside a pile of logs. This should serve as a good clue to how this cache has been hidden!

While you are here why not extend your walk to take a look at the Flash itself, a large body of water created by mining subsidence. The Country Park is renowned for its birdlife so bring some binoculars with you. There are several bird hides, a childrens play area, picnic areas and a good network of footpaths. More information can be found through the Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust homepage.

This cache has been placed with the kind permission of the Senior Ranger.

I hope this makes a nice walk for some cachers and their families.
