Geocache Description:

This is a third generation cache. Bennetts Bog was the location of one of the first caches I ever did. It was a great cache and the area struck me as very beautiful and unusual. After the cache was archived, I asked the owner if I could place a cache of my own there.

The Audubon Society recently restricted access to the bog, to preserve the delicate ecosystem. Please respect the area, bring binoculars and enjoy viewing the bog and its inhabitants from the parking lot viewing area. Information about joining guided walks can be found at the link provided.

Vernal pools are miniature ecosystems: natural depressions covered by shallow water for variable periods from winter to spring, they are typically dry for most of summer and fall. By late summer, a vernal pool is generally (but not always) dry. A vernal pool, because of its periodic drying, does not support breeding populations of fish. These temporary wetlands provide habitat to many specias of amphibians-several of which breed exclusively in vernal pools-as well as a multitude of insects, reptiles, plants and other wildlife. Many organisims have evolved to use a temporary wetland which will dry but where they are not eaten by fish.

Bennetts Bog, jointly owned by the NJ Audubon Society and The Nature Conservancy, is nationally famous for it's many rare and unusual plants and is a favorite spot for bird enthusiasts.
