Geocache Description:

This is the highest cache in Washington state, at around 12,270 ft. (until someone decides to put one on Rainier)

The coordinates for this cache are for the old fire lookout at the top of Mt. Adams. Some seasons it is completely buried year round, but this year the snow has melted off of most of the south side of the mountain. There is a climbers log book at the top that you can sign your name in, it was located on the back side of the shack in the metal box.

The elevation gain from the south side hike is over a mile of straight up, but this can be done as a day hike or an overnighter, and the route is considered non-technical. There are numerous other ways to the summit but this is considered the easiest. This hike kicked my butt, however there were many people doing it. It took me about six hours from my car to summit. Everyone from serious mountaineers, to guys and girls in tennis shoes and t-shirts with their dogs were climbing.(though I wouldn't recommend the latter.) I used crampons and walked up what little snowfield were left, but many people found their way up the rock fields.

To do this climb you must obtain a climbing pass. They are available at the trout lake ranger station at any hour. (there is a do it yourself box for nighttime) For those of you willing to take on the challenge, be sure to bring plenty of water. I drank just under a gallon on my hike. Make sure that you have the proper safety gear, this is more than your average hike, and weather can change quickly.

One quick hint. If you can, use crampons and stay on the snow fields as much as possible. I found it much quicker than the rocks. Good luck.

Bonus points (whatever that is worth) to the first finder who also finds and posts the sentences inscribed on the rock at piker's peak.
